Social Development & Motivation

Our research examines how emotions influence motivation, behavior, relationships, and development across the lifespan. This work includes examining discrete emotions and their associated motivational pursuits (in children and young adults), learning and well-being of young adults acculturating into the U.S., the development and communication of emotion across cultures and genders, and American and Japanese adolescents’ experience of positive and negative emotions over time.

Mental Health & Stress

What are the psychological and social processes that contribute to mental health, stress, and well-being? This work includes research on anxiety and depression, friendship and social support, emotion regulation, positive emotions, stress, and coping. We are particularly interested in the factors that may increase vulnerability to psychological distress or promote resilience, including academic stress, social relationships, and individual differences in emotional functioning.

Physical Health & Health Equity

What are the psychological, social, and structural factors that influence physical health and access to health care? This work is focused on understanding how social and developmental factors contribute to health and shape people's experiences within health care systems.
